Frequently Asked Questions
How does the BPM Tap Tempo Tool work?
Each tap records a high-resolution timestamp using performance.now(). The tool calculates the interval between consecutive taps in milliseconds, converts each interval to BPM (60,000 / interval), and computes a running average across all recorded intervals. The more taps you provide, the more the average converges on the true tempo.
How many taps do I need for an accurate BPM?
At least 4-8 taps give a reasonable estimate. More taps produce a more accurate average. The tool shows a running average that stabilizes as you tap along to the beat.
Can I tap along to a song to find its BPM?
Yes. Play the song and tap the spacebar or click the button on each beat. After several taps, the displayed BPM will converge on the song's actual tempo.
Why does my BPM fluctuate at first?
With only 2-3 taps, small timing variations cause large BPM swings. As you add more taps, the average smooths out and stabilizes to the true tempo within about 8 taps.
